Property Description:

The barn is situated on 500 square metre plot in the centre of a pretty hamlet called Les Clarets. There are few fences apart from functional farm fences which keep summer cattle, horses and the occasional donkey where they are supposed to be. We have resisted the temptation (difficult for an Englishman!) to fence off the garden and create a plot separate from and not in character with the hamlet. However, pets are generally very welcome in the hamlet as long as they are reasonably well behaved. We have found the attitude to pets in this rural region a little more relaxed than one might find in England.

La Grange was constructed in 1830 and was in use until about 15 years ago. The walls are 50 cms thick and naturally provide a cool haven in warm summers and good insulation against the winter cold. Little has been changed on the outside since the Parc National de la Chartreuse are very keen to safeguard the traditional nature of the buildings. The total area of the living accommodation is about 140 square metres. Apart from the ground floor kitchen, all of the rooms have been constructed almost entirely with wood. By contrast, the kitchen and dining room retain the original stone walls and vaulted brick ceiling. The situation is very sunny with the front facing due south. The west side (in view) takes the morning sun until noon.

Area Description:

Visit the little known and mysterious Chartreuse region. This area has been awarded National Park status in recognition of its great natural beauty. La Chartreuse is one of 4 'pre-alp' areas which surround the alps proper. The landscape is much softer, generally greener and rises to 6600 feet maximum. This makes for one of the best areas for hill walking in France. Enjoy the stunning scenery, superb summer walking; mountain biking; winter skiing; snowshoe tours and other mountain sports all year round. Quiet visits to the Chartreusian Monastery and other sites of interest in La Chartreuse ....one of the best kept secrets in France ! Area Activities

La Grange provides an ideal summer or winter retreat . Walking is the main activity in the Chartreuse with 100's of miles of tracks to suit all levels of fitness. The nearest village (St. Pierre d'Entremont) is 5 kms away and has all the usual shops, including a mini-supermarket, 2 bakers, an extremely good organic butcher, an excellent local cheese co-operative and even a hairdressors ! There are a few restaurants in the village. Chambery is 25 kms away and packed with excellent resto's. Around the Chartreuse, there are several must see's such as the world famous monastery (where the drink Chartreuse is made), the Indian Garden adventure park at Sappey and the wine caves at Voiron. There are also guided wine tours in season plus the best summer walking and winter snow-shoe tracks in France.

There are several local ski stations, both downhill and cross-country skiing plus miles and miles of snowshoe/walking tracks. The nearest is about 5 kms away. The best is St.Pierre en Chartreuse which is 13 kms away. All the resorts in the Chartreuse are relatively low. However, for the experienced skier, both Chambery and Grenoble are close by and each city has a variety of surrounding larger resorts - such as Chamrouse and Les Sept Leux. These are NOT the resorts generally known to foreigner and tend to be much cheaper. They are however very good.
