Area Description:

Fayence and Seillans are amongst several picturesque and historic villages on a ridge of hills situated in the unspoilt hinterland just inland from the famous resorts and beaches of the Riviera. They are amongst the most beautiful villages in France – with stone village houses lining narrow cobbled streets leading to a 'Place du Marche' or castle and church. Nowadays they are popular centres for tourists and visitors with lots of shops and restaurants and several hotels. In addition to local shops and restaurants there is a different provencal market for nearly every day of the week. For excursions it is only a 30-minute drive to the resorts of the Riviera or inland there are many more wonderful undiscovered villages in the hinterland -with shady squares by a tinkling fountain surrounded by Cote de Provence vineyards. A ‘must see’ - is a visit to the unique and spectacular Gorges of Verdon best enjoyed as part of a day of leisurely exploration - unique in the whole of Europe and one of the greatest tourist attractions in Provence. This is an area of spectacular natural beauty. in the middle of a nature reserve - Parc Naturel Regional du Verdon - officially inaugurated in March 1997. It includes 43 villages of the two departments of the Var and Alpes de Hautes Provence and spreads out over nearly 178,000 hectares - rich in flora and fauna – with astonishing scenery. It was a relatively undiscovered world until fairly recent times - not really discovered until the beginning of the 20th century. Deep in the gorges the river Verdon is accessible by canoe which can be hired locally. The river feeds four lakes - Lac d’Esparron de Verdon, Lac de Quinson, Lac de Sainte Croix and Lac de Castillon – and the tranquil waters of these lakes are perfect for family water sports – canoeing, sailing, pedalos, wind-surfing, and swimming.
