Property Description:

'Les Cigales' is a holiday villa perfect for families who love lazy days round the pool, but also want to be in the most delightful corner of Provence – the Luberon valley.

The villa is right in the ‘Golden Triangle’ between the famous Luberon villages of Menerbes and Lacoste, and is close to the other medieval hilltop villages that make the area so sought after: Bonnieux, Gordes, Roussillon, Goult, Lourmarin, Oppede-le-Vieux, etc. All are officially members of The Most Beautiful Villages of France, and a short drive or cycle away.

The villa is set in a garden amid pine trees where the quiet is only punctuated by the cicadas in the summer. The kitchen and living room both open onto the terrace with pool, through three sets of French doors, so there is a sense of the house and garden merging into one – this is great because in the long, glorious summers of Provence you only want to go indoors to cook and sleep!

The house is comfortably furnished and equipped with everything you might need, including essentials like dishwasher, cots and baby bath. The pool is fenced in so you can secure it against children going in when you’re watching them. In the summer the pool gets up to 28 C (82 F).

This house is great for families. Upstairs are two bedrooms and a bathroom with shower. You have to go through the double bedroom to get to the twin room, so it's ideal for keeping an eye on the children.

The twin room sleeps 3 and there is room in the parents' room for cots. There are two cots available, as well as a baby bath. A balcony from the parents' room looks down onto the pool and garden, and over to the Luberon mountain.

Downstairs are a double bedroom and a twin bedroom, with a bathroom and separate WC between them. The twin room has zip and link beds so can make a seamless double. The sleeping arrangements will suit a large group, or two families, and your rooms will be in two separate parts of the house for a little more privacy.

If you don't fancy venturing out further than the nearest bakery or restaurant, you'll find plenty to do at the villa. Apart from lounging around the pool and pool-house, in the garden there is a ping-pong table, badminton, croquet, and a proper set of boules. There's an ideal boules playing surface too on the gravel. There are 4 mountain bikes - two for adults and two for kids aged 6-8. For smaller children there are also various toys. In the unlikely event of rain there is a TV and video, and board games.

Area Description:

The Luberon is one of the enchanted corners of this world. Peter Mayle certainly thought so when he gave up the rat race to live down the road and write 'A Year in Provence'

Close your eyes and think of Provence and this is what you see: the lavender-scented landscapes; daily markets overflowing with local produce that actually tastes of something; the charming Provencal people; hilltop villages rising above the sea of vineyards and sunflowers; outstanding food and wine; and the sensational quality of light that has always brought painters and poets here. In Provence, everything simply tastes, smells, and looks better than at home. And it’s all right on your doorstep.

Area Activities

Here are some of the many things you can do using the villa as your base:

* Go to the local markets and rediscover what food used to taste like - there is one in a different village every day.
* Long, lazy lunches (and dinners) outside.
* Lose the extra calories by cycling round the famous hilltop villages: Gordes, Bonnieux, Lacoste, Roussillon, Lourmarin, Oppede-le-vieux, etc.
* Antique and bric-a-brac hunting at Isle-sur-Sorgue - France’s antiques capital.
* Choose from an endless number of walks in the 120,000 ha Luberon Natural Park, starting from your doorstep.
* Explore Fontaine de Vaucluse - the extraordinary source of the crystal-clear Sorgue river (or ride a canoe down it).
* Visit the Marquis de Sade's castle at neighbouring Lacoste
* Bump into Princess Caroline at chi-chi St Remy.
* Learn to paint sunflowers.
* Picnic in the cedar forests outside lovely Bonnieux.
* Drive to the top of Mont Ventoux (cycle if you're mad) and let the Alps and the Med take your breath away.
* Marseille, one hour away, is France's most exciting city, and home to the world's best bouillabaisse.
* Avignon, half an hour away, is a fascinating medieval city small enough to walk round in a day.
* Go wine-tasting at the local vineyards or venture just beyond Avignon for some great Rhone wines - Chateauneuf du Pape, Cote Rotie, Cornas.
* Day trips to Monte Carlo, Cannes, the Camargue, Arles, Aix, Orange, Gorges du Verdon, Rhone wine trail, even Spain if you leave early.
