Property Description:

This grand mediaeval house has oodles of character and charm. It has recently been gently restored and furnished by a sympathetic English owner who is well known in the community. It is regarded as being one of the lovliest historic houses in the village. Old staircases abound and there is an abundance of ancient exposed stone walls on the three floors.

On the top floor is a bathroom (with front loading washing machine); one double room and a single room. However this excellent bed is able to be moved to create a family room in one of the others. There is a charming sitting area facing West with a sofa as well as a small terrace under the eves affording a beautiful tranquil vista. This is an excellent drying area too.
On the middle floor there is a 17th century plastered room with a King size brass bed and also the evocative kitchen. The kitchen is filled with solid oak French country furniture and has an excellent array of cooking utensils and appliances. The oval table can be extended to seat 8 or 10. There are two dinner services and a good number of glasses.
On the ground floor is the Reception Hall.
From this leads the main staircase to all the upper floors and a mezzanine floor which has a large twin bedded room with en suite facilities. There is also a separate toilet leading off the staircase.
There is considerable cellar space off the street for storing empty luggage and skis/bicycles etc.

There are two large open fire places - one in the main Reception Hall and another in the Kitchen. Antiques and beautiful carpets create a perfect ambiance for those discerning people in search of tranquility and comfort. There is a wonderful kitchen and dining area. For non-cooking visitors, the nearest excellent restaurant serving simple and excellent country cooking is 10 seconds away across the road! Also around the corner next to the Abbey church is an award winning restaurant. The village has excellent parking and very little traffic.

Alas, the house is not really suited for very young children because of the staircases and steps. And it is a house for non-smokers at all times. Really tall people should mind their heads on some of the exposed beams. Mediaeval people were not so tall as those today. Anyway, two doors away is the Pharmacie should you forget!

There is central heating in all rooms except the Entrance Hall where there is a log fire. The house is very cosy in the winter and quite cool in the summer.

A heating supplement agreed with the owners is required for mid-winter letting.

Area Description:

Just north of Provence, Saint-Antoine is a wonderful mediaeval village dominated by the vast Abbey and its buildings overlooking the Vercors mountains. It is 40 minutes West from Grenoble and 1 1/2 hours South of Lyon. The great Abbey church houses the relics of France's 2nd Patron Saint - St Anthony of Egypt. It is also the venue for concerts as the organ is noted as being one of France's finest in the French Baroque style. There is a concert in the summer months every Sunday at 17.00hrs.

For the cultural and artistic guest, the village possesses a really fine museum, potter, stonemason, art galleries, book-binder, as well as a shop making and selling all things honey! Throughout the year there are a number of antique and country fairs within the beautiful Abbey courtyard. (Ask for details and dates).

For provisions there is a well stocked village supermarket and a fantastic organic bakery across the other side of the main square with a wonderful selection of breads and cakes. A vast brand new supermarket is a 10 minute drive down the valley before reaching Saint-Marcellin. Their petrol/diesel is the cheapest in the vacinity.
The Isere valley is noted for the many walnut orchards and abundance of local produce. St Marcellin - about 12 minutes away - houses the National Cheese Museum. There are endless mountain roads and walks within a 30 minute radius. Some of the roads in the Vercors provide some of the most magnificent driving in the Alps. The whole of the Vercors is a National park and it is also the sacred place in France devoted to the Resistance movement in WW2. The Resistance Museum is situated in the centre of the region. There are fantastic caves to see as well.
Romans is a town about 30 minutes away and is the shoe-making captital of France. There is the Shoe Museum to view and large number of outlets of the international Parisian famous named stores from which to buy. A most elegant town on the Isere river.
For wine buffs, Saint-Antoine is on the edge of the Saint-Joseph and Crozes Hermitage region. A number of "caves" are delighted to welcome tasters!

The new TGV station (Valence) is about 35 mins away with international hire car possibilites. St Antoine is well connected with Lyon International airport being 70 mins away and St Geoirs - Grenoble Airport 35 mins. Hire cars are available at each. Flights from the UK are excellent to Lyon and new routes are constantly being created - such as Thompson from Coventry at very low fares indeed. Easyjet from London-Stansted have just begun their new low-cost route to Grenoble which can hardly be nearer to St Antoine (exactly 30 mins drive away). From April 20th, this changes to London-Luton. Car hire at each is excellent and there is an office of Eurocar at Valence TGV station as well.

Area Activities

Walking, cycling, horse riding, winter skiing (most years in the Vercors) and sitting looking at the ever changing views! There is a good open air swimming pool in St Marcellin (15 mins).
The area is one of the most unspoilt in France and is still to be fully explored. Breathtaking mountain scenery provide ample opportunities for the out-door person. Being on the edge of Provence and the Ardeche, visitors have more than enough places for exploration by car. Avignon and the deep South is within 2 hours too.
There are numerous attractions for all the family within a short distance. 20 minutes away there is a lovely paddle steamer ride down the grand Isere river affording superb opportunites to view the wild bird life. The Choranche caves (30 mins) are some of the most amazing to see in the whole of Europe. Live prehistoric lizards are still to be seen there. The museum of the great Chartruese Abbey (50mins) is an absolute 'must see'. The Chartreuse distillery and tasting room at Voiron is also an excellent visit. There are other attractions - far too many to describe here - within a short car ride.
Excellent towns and cities to see include Romans (30 mins), Grenoble (35 mins), Valence (40mins), Montellimar (50 mins), Grignan (60 mins), Orange (90 mins) and Lyons (90 mins).
