Property Description:

"La Romaine"

A large contemporary Provencal house with pool, in a medieval village with Roman ancestry, in the Cotes du Rhone wine-producing region.Located near the Mont Ventoux

"La Romaine" is a large house constructed in 1900, renovated in the 60's and divided into two apartments. It has earned a four star rating from the regional Tourism bureau. It has a traditional "Roman" tiled roof and solid masonry walls that keep it cool during the summer months. The ground floor apartment opens onto a beautiful patio that leads to the pool and the park. The walls around the property guarantee privacy without interfering with the view of the Chateau of the Comtes de Toulouse, the Chateau of the archdiocese, and the bell tower of the 12th century cathedral. Set against the backdrop of archeological digs that have brought to life the architectural legacy of the Roman Empire, the well shaded park has a wide variety of plants. This beautiful setting, combined with a pool long enough to swim laps (20m x 8m), is guaranteed to bring the vacationer well deserved tranquility and rest. The two apartments can be combined for a large group or family, or kept divided for two different groups.

During August the swimming pool and gardens may be used by both apartments. For the rest of the year they are reserved for the lower apartment only.

The upper apartment has two bedrooms on the second floor. There is a twin bedroom decorated on an African theme - with bamboo furniture, zebra pattern fabrics and various African art pieces - and another twin bedroom decorated on an Indian theme - silks, saris, and glistening colours. There is also an open kitchen, and a full bathroom and toilet.

Area Description:

The house is a five-minute walk from the centre of the village where one can enjoy lively cafes and restaurants.

Vaison-la-Romaine is a medieval village whose ancestry goes back to Roman times. It is home to a 12th century castle that has stood since the crusades and the surrounding area is rich in culture and architecture. The town is well frequented by tourists who come to view its great past and to hear one the many chorales from all over the world that its International Festival attracts throughout the summer.

The village is surrounded by vineyards of the Cote du Rhone, and there are many cellars that offer degustations of their products. The renowned cookbook author and journalist Patricia Wells runs her cooking school from Vaison.

The rolling hills are crisscrossed by numerous well-maintained small roads (departementales) that make it a pleasure to explore the area on a bicycle. Further away is the famed Mont Ventoux a landmark of the Tour de France, but also an enduring source of fascination for artistes. It has been registered by UNESCO as a World Heritage site because of its its unique geography and the wealth of its flora and fauna.

Recreational cycling is a favourite activity around Vaison but so is rock-climbing at the Dentelles de Montmirail where a number of routes of varying difficulty lure the experts as well as the beginners.

Area Activities

Around Vaison are the vineyards and also the olive groves and the lavender fields that stretch as far as the eye can see, offering countless possibilities for strolling, walking, riding or driving.

The cultural wealth of the region also acts as a shining beacon, bringing people to Avignon for example where the world renowned Theatre Festival showcases more than 4,000 plays during the summer months starting July 1st. But there are also countless music, opera, and dance performances taking place throughout the region in particular in the Roman theatres of Orange, Nimes and Arles whose architecture dating back to the occupation of Gaul in the first three centuries is an endearing memory that the traveller will forever carry around.
