This region offers charmingly unspoiled natural sites, from the Cote d'Opale coast, including the Cap Gris Nez and Blanc Nez sites, both registered as belonging to the world's natural heritage, to the orchards of the Avesnois area. You will also enjoy what we affectionately term the mountains of Flanders. We cannot complete this picture postcard tour without describing our 120 km of beaches and fine sand.Sealovers will not want to miss Nausicaa, a fantastic oceanographic museum in Boulogne sur Mer.
A land of legendary giants, carnivals, outdoor trade fairs, and traditional fairs called ducasses. The largest Carnival takes place in Dunkirk. Dozens of thousands of dancers and carnival-goers take part in festivities. Leave your first weekend of September free... that's when Lille holds its famous Braderie, a huge outdoor trade fair that draws one million people from all over Europe. After all, music goes beautifully with fairs and good food : waterzoï, potjevlesh, and tarte aux maroilles (a succulent cheese pie) are just a few great names from our typical culinary heritage.
Visit the largest bookstore in the world, called the Furet du Nord in Lille. For years, Jean-Claude Casadesus has conducted the National Orchestra of Lille and Daniel Mesguisch has headed the La Métaphore theatre. The fine arts museums in Lille, Cambrai, Tourcoing, Valenciennes, Calais, Arras, Saint-Omer and Douai, as well as the modern art museum in Villeneuve d'Ascq are worth the trip.
