Area Description:

Saint Siffret is a charming medieval village boasting two resturants, and 3 of the souths best wine Caveau's where it's a joy to experience taking your own 5 litre bottle for them to fill with a lovely deep red Merlot,Cabernet,Rosa or White Wine (that's so cheap.)
Uzes is only 4km. away and the saturday morning market is reputed to be best in the south of France for Wine, cheese, honey, truffles, garlic and of course all the other artefacts that had to a markets joy. If you are keen on golf the nearest nine hole golf course is at Uzes. The source for the famous Roman Aquaduct (Pont du Gard) is also at Uzes beside the river Alzon, and the Alzons gorge is a joy to walk. The Pont du Gard 10 minutes away is reputed to be one of the most visited Roman remains in the world. Here you can swim, fish, take a canoe, or just relax beside the waters taking in the atmosphere. For those keen on fishing the rivers Gardon and Alzon, daily licenses are on sale at the Uzes tourist office, June to September.
The lovely town of Avignon and a visit to the Popes Palace is a must being only 1/2 hour away, as is Nimes with it's Roman Ampitheatre and Temple. A drive to St.Marie's De-la Mer, the lovely coastal town takes about one hour via the lovely Camargue region, where the famous White horses, Black bulls and Flamingoes are to be seen.
La Cheminee is a great place to stay, come and relax beside the pool and listen to the singing of the birds and cigala's day and night, smell the lovely lavender and see how the many different coloured beautiful Butterflies flutter around it. La Cheminee is an excellent place for Birdwatchers with non-birding family as they can easily reach some very good sites while the family are still in bed or relaxing by the pool. In the local Gorge du Gardon there are walks and canoing where you can get Crag Martin, Black Kite, Short Toed Eagle, Woodchat Shrike and near Pont St Nicholas there is a large breeding colony of Bee Eaters. You can be in the Crau in less than an hour for some excellent species such as Lesser Kestrel, Little Bustard, Stone Curlew and Calandra Lark. Or the Camargue for Night Heron, Purple Heron, Squacco Heron, Little Bittern, Zitting Cisticola, Cettis Warbler, Collared Pratincole, Roller, Slender billed Gull, Roller, Bee Eater and of course Greater Flamingo. For a full day birdwatching the Cevennes above Florac across to the Gorge du Jonte can get you 3 Buzzard species, Crag Martin, Pallid Swift, Subalpine warbler, Sardinian Warbler, Ortolan Bunting, Crested Tit, Black Eared Wheatear, Lesser Grey Shrike and many more.
Also for a full day a trip to Mont Ventoux is worthwhile for Rock Bunting, Alpine Accentor, Citril Finch on the higher slopes while lower down there are Redstart, Black redstart, Red Rumped Swallow, Goshawk. It is also a good raptor watching site. Overall we had over 220 species and many wonderful butterflies in the area including Swallowtail, Scarce Swallowtail, Cleopatra and Camberwell Beauty. Humming Bird Hawk Moths were common and we also had a Broad Bordered Bee Hawk Moth. But the best time visitors always say is when they just relax by the pool, BBQ in the evening, whilst enjoying the local wine etc. you don't have to go far except for a walk through the forest that's around us or into the village for the occasional meal, because it's great to be able to BBQ, swim, play, relax and drink without driving.
But if exploring is your forte, then all the famous historical towns of Orange, Arles, St.Remy de Provence, Montpellier and many others that are well worth a visit, are all within easy reach.
