Property Description:

Area Description:

The Town of Peret

Peret is a small village ( about 500 people), very old (c.800AD), set into the side of a hill with views of the rolling plains of the l'Herault Valley -the valley is one of the rich wine growing areas of Languedoc. The air here is remarkably pure - it's said to be the cleanest in France. . The village has a grocery, a boulangerie and a tabac. There's a tennis court, a wine cooperative, and every year during the last week of July, a fete in the square. There's a 12th century church on the square opposite the house and ten minutes walk through the ancient streets will take you to the 11th century chapel with Roman foundations, Notre-Dame des Buis. From here you can stroll out of the village and up into the hillsides and the sweet-smelling garrigue. Wild herbs abound in the hills.

For shopping and night life, about 40 minutes from the village there is the elegant city of Montpellier. The closest city of a smaller size is Pezenas, about 15 minutes away, which has stunning architecture, lots of Museums and is a centre for artists and artisans. Another town about the same distance away is Beziers, on the Canal du Midi..This was formerly a Roman town with an arena and was a stronghold of the Cathars in the 12th century. North is the town of Lodeve which has a beautiful art Museum and not far away is the mediaeval village of St Guilhem le Desert and its abbey, which was an important stopping point on the pilgrimage route in the Middle Ages.

The local place to shop (2 supermarkets) is Clermont l'Herault, a pretty, sleepy place about 10 minutes away from Peret, where there has been a market every Wednesday for the last 1000 years. Shop here for the great fresh produce of the region and cook at home or eat in one of the many restaurants in the area that specialise in local dishes.
