Property Description:
Sainte Cecile is a magnificent old stone farmhouse in the foothills of the Orb Mountains, just fifteen minutes from the medieval town Pezenas and around half an hour from the Mediterranean coast. It is three kilometres from the nearest village and surrounded by unspoiled countryside. Green shutters, roses in the garden, olives and vines, cicadas in the trees, sunshine all day long. It really is your dream French house.There are six large bedrooms (three double) and two mezzanines so you can comfortably sleep ten adults and more children. The house probably works best with either one or two families. There is a fully-fitted kitchen, a terrace with beautiful views over the surrounding hills, a drawing room, a dining room, a library that doubles as a television room – complete with Sky television and all the sports and film channels and a billiard room.
There is an office with internet access. There is a bathroom, a separate shower room and three lavatories. The garage has a washing machine and tumble dryer, as well as a table-tennis table. This is as close as you can get to those lovely films Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources. Our water supply even comes from a spring. There is sufficient water for cooking, drinking, washing – both people and clothes – and the swimming pool. It continued to flow even in the long hot dry summer of 2003. However, do please be careful with it. Leave a tap needlessly running and the pump will run dry and you will need to wait several hours for the tank to fill up again.
The garden covers several hectares. There are swings, a hammock (very useful for lazing around in) a large swimming pool and a smaller baby pool.
There are Unopiu sun-loungers as well as tables and chairs around the pool, very useful for the early evening aperitif. There is a trampoline. There is a shady spot close to the source in the garden where you can have lunch if the terrace is too hot.

Here is a typical summer’s day. You get up early and ride down to Gabian to pick up croissants and a baguette. After a refreshing swim in the pool, which is softened by salt so you don’t stink of chlorine, you have a leisurely breakfast.By now it’s ten o’clock. Now you have a choice: you can either head south to Pezenas to buy oysters, asparagus, (figs you can pick from the trees in the garden) or go north to the hills where in Herepian is one of the finest charcuterie shops in the region. If you already have lunch in the fridge, you need go nowhere. Or you could go to Gabian and buy a cooked chicken. You bring the food home, open a bottle of rose and sit down in the shade. By three o’clock it’s time for a siesta. Then a leisurely swim or a walk. All of a sudden it’s time for an aperitif. The children are playing in the pool. For dinner you can use the barbecue, cooking on vine logs.
At ten o’clock the cicadas go quiet. It’s time now for another bottle of wine or a walk in the fresh air under more stars that you ever thought possible. Or perhaps a game of table tennis or billiards. What to do tomorrow? More of the same.
Area Activities
More adventurous types will find plenty of things to do in the region. There are tennis courts less than a ten-minute drive away, a golf course in the pretty spa town of Lamalou-les-Bains, countless walks, horse-riding, canoeing down the Orb river, picnics at local beauty spots, the Mediterranean coast, cities such as Montpellier, Beziers and Nimes to visit, as well as picturesque towns like Marseillan with its pretty port and delightful restaurants.Sainte Cecile is a family home so ideally suited for holidays with children. You will need to feed our dog and cat once a day but other than that they are pretty self-sufficient.
