Property Description:

The apartment has three comfortable bedrooms, a very large living / dining area overlooking the entry court. The high ceilings provide lots of wall space to display paintings and prints by local artists. 7 foot high doubleglazed windows overlook the gated entry court below where there are three local artisans whose shops close in the evenings when the courtyard closes to tourist traffic. The main social area of the flat is very open and large with a large fully equipped kitchen – washer/dryer/ dishwasher, microwave, large fridge, breakfast area, etc separated from the living dining area by a serving bar. There are heaters and ceiling fans in most rooms though the thickness of the walls keeps the temperature fairly constant and comfortable. There is a washroom / WC off the large main foyer which is separated from the living / dining area by glass French doors. Two bedrooms are along a corridor leading away from this foyer and front on the entry courtyard. They have 14 ft beamed ceilings and are simply furnished. There is a washroom at the end of this hall with a shower stall and sink. The main bedroom is down a few steps and off a small foyer where there is a separate WC and a separate full bathroom with double sinks. This bedroom is large and has a small art studio off of it. The bedroom windows and a door from the studio form an “L” and embrace the private terrace. This terrace is the only one in the building and so is very private. It has a roll down canopy for shade and privacy, a large table which seats 8 plus, and a gas BBQ. The terrace overlooks an interior courtyard where there is a small omlette and sandwich cafe populated mostly during lunch. The main entry to the deck is through a large sitting room with French doors, a couch, arm chairs and more of the owners’ large collection of books and CDs. The room is a wonderful quiet escape from those friends who yesterday, you couldn’t get enough of.
There are two trail bikes in the apartment as well as maps, tour books, English novels, board games, stereo, CD’s and no TV . It is ideal for 4 to 6 adults who want the independence that immediate proximity to cafes shops, galleries and bike trails affords. While there are no cars allowed in the center of town, there is adequate free parking in various lots and squares outside the gates. Rue de La Foire where the property is located is 200 ft. from one of the gates leading out of the historic center.

Area Description:

The Languedoc has had much written about it recently. It is relatively quiet compared to Province and quite sophisticated compared to the Roussillon. Pezenas was by-passed by the railroad and managed to preserve its architectural and cultural history beyond what it would have otherwise. The location is ideal for day trips to Carcassonne, the Camargue, the Crusader town of St. Guilhem, the Roman ruins and aquaduct in Nimes, the ancient “Greek” port of Sete where there are jousting (in boats) tournaments during the summer weekends, the oyster farm restaurants off the “thau” in Bouzigues, or the perfect shopping and touring day in Montpellier with its grand blend of modern and classical architecture, its large and lively student population and its fabulous shopping. You are less than two hours from Spain and the same from Province. The Cevennes is above and perhaps the best beaches in France are twenty minutes “below”.

Area Activities

The location of Pezenas at the center of the Languedoc wine growing region provides many opportunities to explore and taste both the wines and the foods that complement them. Within five minutes ride of the apartment you can be away from the traffic and surrounded by the vineyards on the many wine roads that pass by and through domains, chateaux and monasteries. Every Saturday Pezenas hosts one of the larger regional farmers’ markets. The market winds around the main street outside the historic center. The gate to Rue Jean Jaures is less than 100yds from the apartment so picking up flowers, roasted farm chickens, baguettes local cheeses requires no driving but may involve several short walks from “home” as the day progresses.

Being a year round artists’ community, Pezenas does not lack for bakeries, patisseries, fruit and vegetable stands, grocery stores and newspaper stands with most international papers available. There are a number of festivals throughout the year which wind through the cobblestone streets and always by Rue de la Foire in front of Carrion Nizas. The restaurants are many and varied especially in the summer when they can serve outdoors on the pleasant terraces. The 5 or 6 cafes along the Place de 14th Juillet – a two minute walk away, provide a wonderful escape for that quiet Pastisse while people watching.
