Property Description:

“L’atelier de Moliere” is situated in the historic centre of Pezenas, in a quiet street, which once played host to Moliere and his band of actors, just a few paces away in the theatre which stood on that spot. The apartment is in a 16th Century building, and upon entering through a magnificent portico, one ascends an original stone spiral staircase to the top floor. Legend has it that the great prophet Nostradamus, who studied in the region, climbed these very stairs to observe the heavens from the roof. From these carved steps the apartment door opens on to a perfect mix of ancient and modern - old wooden beams and the clean fresh lines of a tasteful, contemporary conversion.
To the left, upon entering, is the dining area, with table and chairs to seat four. Directly opposite is the kitchen. Beyond, the generously proportioned living room with a large sofa and coffee table provides the central living space from which two bedrooms – the one with 2 single beds, the other with a double sofa bed - are accessible. Two separate bathrooms with shower and WC complete the well-balanced interior.
Although the apartment, with its rooftop views across the warm terracotta tiles of Le Midi, complements perfectly the historic charm of the building, the visitor will lack nothing in modern-day comforts. From washing machine, clothes drier, and dishwasher to a fridge freezer and kitchen equipment with a distinctly professional feel, everything has been carefully chosen for maximum convenience. Electric heating makes a winter stay also viable.
With only three minutes walk to the old centre of Pezenas, with its weekly market of local produce, and its fascinating craft shops, a stay at any time of the year assures the perfect blend of being involved in the daily life of a typically Southern French town and yet, at the same time, being peacefully discreet.

Area Description:

Pezenas has often been called the “ Versailles of the Languedoc “ on account of the richness of its historical architecture. In fact, wandering the narrow streets of the old town, one has often the impression that little, if anything, has changed since the playwright Moliere (1622 – 1673) sat in the Place Gambetta with his friend the barber Gely, and did character studies of passers-by, to create characters who still delight theatre audiences nearly 400 years later.
Today, Pezenas offers the visitor not only a window on to the past, but also the experience of a bustling Mediterranean town, which is dynamic and fascinating to explore. The Saturday market for local produce attracts people from the whole region, and in the summer months craft shops and galleries vie with each other for the attention of visitors, who can stroll in the cool of the evening from pavement cafes to local restaurants (often set in magnificent interior courtyards ), or choose to attend concerts and exhibitions, all part of the rich cultural life of the region.
Pezenas is 15 minutes from the coast, where a wide choice of maritime activities await. Long sandy beaches near Marseillan combine with picturesque old ports on the Thau lagoon, or the cosmopolitan new marina at Cap d’Agde to provide a range of activities to meet every taste.
Travelling inland, the valley of the Herault rises slowly to the foothills of the Cevennes, with their breathtaking views over the Golfe du Lion. Standing on these slopes, and looking across the fertile plain to Pezenas, one realises how perfectly this charming town is situated, between green mountains and sparkling beaches.

Area Activities

The Herault area provides a wide range of activities for all tastes and interests. The coast, which is 15 minutes from Pezenas, is unusual in offering not only long sandy beaches, and vibrant, modern marinas, but also sleepy little ports specialising shellfish and seafood.
Inland the range of possibilities is no less varied. The large, freshwater Lake of Salagou, is a wind-surfers paradise. In the Gorges de l’Herault it is possible to hire a canoe, to drift slowly down the upper reaches of the river, the journey punctuated by the excitement of the occasional set of rapids. Sports of every kind – from horse riding to mountain biking, from jet-ski to golf – are available to all.
The rich cultural life of the region is in summer particularly pronounced. Exhibitions, concerts and festivals abound, to delight resident and visitor alike, and often the venue chosen gives access to one of the many well preserved historical buildings or churches which bear testimony to the region’s multi-facetted past.
