Area Description:

Excideuil, with its XIth century fortress, is a charming small market town with a host of mediaeval buildings. Much fought over by Richard, Coeur de Lion, the town was home to troubadour Giraut de Borneil (1160-1219) and also saw Henri II of Navarre, Talleyrand and later General Bugeaud, famous for gaining Algeria for France.
Romanesque architecture can be found in many nearby towns and in Perigueux. Perigueux cathedral was designed by the same architect who built the famous Sacre Coeur in Paris. Cross-country tracks provide wonderful walking and cycling in unspoilt countryside.

The area is of rolling hills and valleys, some steep with gorges, and at every hilltop there are wonderful views. Within a few minutes is an old abbey while a busy little market town just five minutes drive away supplies all the necessary shops, supermarket, bakers, doctors, dentists, restaurants, etc..
There is so much to see and do in the area, from walking or cycling the superb footpaths, exploring prehistoric caves, fortresses or ancient villages, or just relaxing in the summer sun. The lakes for swimming or boating are excellent, and fascinating sights and museums are found throughout the region. The house " Laborie Sud " is ideally placed for exploring the Perigord, an area rich in prehistoric, Roman and Mediaeval remains
