Property Description:

The fully-enclosed private back garden is dramatically bordered on one side by the tall ramparts of the Chateau, and on the other side by the sharp drop of the rock face. It has two separately accessible sunny terraces, one with a 6 person jacuzzi . Graced by jasmine, wisteria, and elegant old rose trees, these terraces open out onto splendid views of the rolling valley and the fully enclosed garden. Having private dinners by flaming torchlight at the base of the Chateau ramparts is an unforgettable experience, not to be missed. The charming front garden with its long blooming white roses and vine-covered trellises winds its way around the house, creating several intimate, shady alcoves.

This magnificent and very special house is a unique holiday rental at any time of the year. Not only are there central heating and a huge traditional functioning cantou fireplace (perfect for barbecuing), but there is also a cast iron, wood -burning stove in the sunken living room.

The beauty of the region's renowned honey-colored stones is as striking in the fading light of late autumn as it is in the long balmy evenings of summer. And long winter nights can be enjoyed among friends lingering over dinner (private chef services are available), or curled up on the couch in front of the blazing fire.

The bright and airy kitchen is equipped including a dishwasher, microwave, toaster, juicer, and coffeemaker, among other amenities. And it features a large old walnut farmhouse table perfect for relaxing country breakfasts.

The elegant sunken living room features the imposing Chateau wall, a high, oak-beamed ceiling, and oak floors.
It has lots of natural light --thanks to the two large picture windows and glass doors opening out onto one of the two terraces and garden. The living room is equipped with a television, satellite TV, a VCR, DVD, and a stereo system. This very striking room is as warm and cosy in winter, as it is cool and airy in summer.

On this same floor there is a very romantic high-beamed, high ceiling bedroom with a double bed and French doors leading out to its own private terrace with a beautiful view of the valley. The lovely full bathroom with shower room and bathtub --also on this floor --enables couples to have an intimate and cosy space without needing to use the upstairs floor.

There are three bright bedrooms on the upper floor with polished oak floors, and wonderful views of the valley and notably the beautifully restored village church. There is a sunny full bathroom and lots of closet space.

Area Description:

The house is located in the heights of the picturesque village of Carlux in the famous Perigord Noir region of Dordogne. A two-minute walk downhill brings you into the center of this beautiful and peaceful village. There you will find a cafe, restaurant, bakery, corner grocery store/newsagents, a butcher's shop, doctor's office, and a post office. There is also a permanent farmer's market selling fresh fruit and vegetables, homemade jams, cheeses, sausages, cakes, and traditional local wines and alcohol. Imagine your piping hot morning croissants and morning newspaper just minutes away!

Carlux's is situated in an enviable location in the Dordogne Valley, close to many of the region's most sought-after sites. Dordogne is world-renowned for its prehistoric caves (Lascaux, Font de Gaume), its troglodyte rock dwellings (Les Eyzes, Roc de Cazelles), its majestic castles (Beynac, Castelnaud, Milandes, Fenelon), its museums (National Museum of Prehistory in Les Eyzes, Museum of Medieval Warfare in Castelnaud), and its parks and gardens (Eyrignac, Marqueyssac Gardens). It's also well known for its celebrated cuisine (foie gras, duck confit, truffles, cepe mushrooms, cabecou goat's cheese). Bergerac and nearby Bordeaux and Cahors are renowned for their wines. And the Pergord Noir region of Dordogne boasts some of France's most well-preserved medieval villages such as Sarlat, and bastides such as Domme.

Don't forget that the Quercy region --just several kilometers from Carlux in the neighboring department of Lot --is full of its own marvels (Rocamadour, Cahors, Collenge-les-Rouge, ancient dolmens and underground caverns...), just waiting to be discovered.

Ideally situated 12km from Sarlat in the Dordogne Valley, Carlux is only 13 km from Souillac (and the newly opened Paris/Toulouse highway). And it's just l5 km from Gourdon in the neighboring Quercy region, in the department of Lot. Bordeaux is a three-hour drive west. Paris a five-hour drive north. And Toulouse a 1.5-hour drive south.

Area Activities

As for outdoor activities, visitors are truly spoilt for choice. A two-minute stroll up into the hills of Carlux brings you to lovely forest walks and gardens. A ten-minute walk or 2 minute drive brings you to the Dordogne River. Across the bridge in neighboring St. Julien de Lampon you can go canoeing/kayaking, river swimming, fishing, jogging, cycling, and mountain biking. Here you can also take riverside walks, or attend a colorful market on Thursday mornings.

There is a choice of several excellent riding stables and an 18-hole golf course nearby in Souillac. And there's a gorgeous 20k forest cycling track for roller blading, cycling, and jogging.

There are many small neighboring farms to visit, which sell homemade duck and goose conserves. There are also traditional local restaurants with superb menus and beautiful terraces overlooking the river.
