Property Description:

Situated some 600 feet directly above the Lot Valley, commanding direct views of the river and its valley from all sides of the property, this former town hall and school is afforded with possibly some of the best views in the Lot Valley. The property has been renovated and converted with a mix of true French Quercy tradition and modern French Chic to a very individual self contained Gite. The gite has its own ‘patio terrace’ overlooking the rear of the property with far reaching views towards Cajarc Sur Lot, some 15 km distant. To the front are individual window balconies that have views towards the 17C Cenevieres Chateaux and further towards Saint Cirq Lapopee. A local villager runs a small horse ridding school, located a 5 minute drive away, where horses can be taken for lessons. From the terrace and balcony can be seen the wildlife of the Lot, with nesting Eagles, Kestrels and Kites, the property gives views of birds that are rarely seen in Northern Europe.

Area Description:

The area is so unspoilt and yet so accessible by tourists. The area provides all aspects for visitors from swimming to pot holing. Local attractions include the Egyptian museum in Figeac along with the former ‘’Bank de France’’. Older history includes prehistoric paintings and dwellings in caves of the Grotte de Pech Merle and the Grotte de Bellevue, all within 15 - 30 minutes of the property.

Hiring mountain bikes (VTT) is perhaps one of the best ways to explore the local area. The bikes can be hired from Cajarc or from many of the small cafes along the Lot or the nearby River Cele.

France would not be France without ‘du vin’, and the Lot area has its fair share of Chateaux and Appellation. To the west is the Cahors region, a heavy dark wine, known as the black wine, it is one of the oldest regions of wine production in France. There are over 200 separate Chateaux, all of which seem to have ‘degustation public’ allowing a no-obligation wine tour of the area for which the producers are only too happy to show their produce to prospective purchasers.

Other wine regions and areas of gastronomy include the area of Gaillac, due south towards Toulouse and Rodez. Here white wine and a method Champagnoise (Champagne types) are produced. In the same region, the famous Roquefort blue cheese is produced, which after Camembert and Brie must be the most famous of French Cheeses.

The surrounding area has some of the most favoured leisure amenities in the Lot. Within a 10 minute walk are beaches on the River Lot that are used by the locals and holiday makers for swimming. Canoes and Kayaks can be hired locally and taken for anything from 1 hour to a day.

Tiny Lizards and Geckos, remnants of the last ice-age, are common visitors to the balcony, but all will take their leave when seen and especially when the human inhabitants of the bald rock make their presence known.

The property gives views of birds that are rarely seen in the towns and cities of Northern Europe, such as eagles, kestrels, kites. You might be lucky enough to spot the local resident snowy owl on a clear starry night or our resident red squirrel living in the walnut tree, especially in late summer, as it checks the ripeness of walnuts by shaking each one vigorously.

Area Activities

A local villager runs a small horse ridding school, located a 10 minute drive away, where horses can be taken for lessons, or rides from 1 hour to a day in length. In addition, there are two tennis courts, a 5 minute walk away (downhill – 15 minutes return !), which can be used upon payment of a nominal fee to the town Mayoress.

Sunday is generally a market day for the region, the market town of Limogne, some 10 km distant, provides a fantastic venue to obtain almost anything including food fare of the freshest bread, foie-gras, local wines, cheeses and herbs to a range of elegant and not so elegant antiques. Many of the items at L’Ancienne Ecole have been purchased from the Limogne and Cajarc antiques market and their remains some excellent bargains to be had.
