Property Description:

This stylish house, situated in a tiny hamlet near the Vezere river, has large grounds with a built-in barbecue and covered parking area. It is actually a modern house with picture windows, but it has been designed with all the character of a traditional property, with exposed beams and stone walls.

The living areas are very comfortably furnished with many antiques, whilst the bedrooms have a simpler decor.

On the ground floor there is a large sitting room and dining room, a separate w.c., as well as a big fitted kitchen with dining area and utility room. This is well-equipped with a dishwasher, washing machine, microwave and freezer. There is also a bathroom with another separate w.c.

One flight of stairs goes up from the dining room to 3 double bedrooms, a shower room, dressing room and separate w.c. A second staircase leads to an attic room with 3 single beds, which is ideal for children. Outside there is an external staircase leading to a double bedroom.

Outside there is a large garden and grounds with plenty of space for fun and games. The fully enclosed pool is a 10m by 5m, a really good size for a private house.

Please note that the local tourist tax is payable at the daily rate of 0.55 centimes per person aged 12 years and above.

Area Description:

Le Maine lies right in the heart of the Dordogne, surrounded by wonderful chateaux dating from the Hundred Year's War, beautifully-preserved "bastides" (fortified towns) and famous pre-historic caves. All of the major sites are within easy reach by car.

Le Bugue (4 km) has all the main facilities and several good restaurants. Market days are Tuesdays and Saturdays.

The area is dominated by the majestic Dordogne and Vezere rivers and is one of outstanding natural beauty, with hills and rock formations rising up either side of the verdant river plains. It is also a gourmet's paradise, producing foie gras, truffles and walnuts and there are hundreds of restaurants, ranging from gastronomic to simple, good value regional cooking, with 3 course menus starting at 12 euro. Not forgetting the famous Cahors, Bergerac, St.Emilion and Montbazillac wines and there are plenty of opportunities for tasting.

Below we have listed some of the area's highlights to give you an idea of the interesting days out you can plan.

In the World Heritage Classified valley of the River Vezere there are many Stone Age relics and caves dating from 20,000 years ago, with under ground rivers, beautiful rock formations, precious stones and crystals. Closest to Le Maine is Les Eyzies (15 km), the centre of pre-history, where caves carved out of the solid rock were used by early Man as dwelling-places and there are magnificent, recreated prehistoric cave-paintings at nearby Lascaux (38 km). La Roque-Gageac (32 km) has exciting rock and cave formations, the bastide town of Domme (38 km) has beautiful views of the river Dordogne, prehistoric caves and many restaurants and interesting shops, Beynac (28 km) has a fantastic castle perched high on the cliffs and Monpazier (35 km) is a medieval bastide town. Further away is medieval Rocamadour (85 km) which is breathtaking cluster of medieval houses carved into a sheer rock face.

There is a huge choice of castles in the area: Les Millandes – once home to Josephine Baker, Castelnaud (34 km) – which has "son et lumiere" performances during the summer months and an excellent museum of medieval weaponry and 17th century Marquayssac with its beautiful ornamental gardens with stunning views over the river valley.

For the keen market-goer, markets are held every day in the various nearby villages and towns. Absolutely not to be missed is the perfectly preserved, Renaissance town of Sarlat (35 km). Twice weekly a large market is held here which attracts locals from all around. The roads are dotted with small shops selling local delicacies and attractive arts and crafts. Sarlat has all the facilities you would expect of the town known as the jewel of the Dordogne. Weekly evening markets in the height of summer are becoming increasingly popular, and offer local speciality foods eaten at long tables under the market square.

The list of more sporting local activities is endless: hot air ballooning over the castles, cycling, fishing, river swimming, tennis, kayaking and canoeing on the Dordogne and Vezere rivers, mountain biking, horse riding, rambling, scenic views and walks, trout and river fishing, golf and scenic gardens.

Take a boat trip through the ‘Vallee of the Dordogne’, cycle or kayac to see the picturesque riverside hamlets, or just laze by the pool in the peaceful surroundings, read a book or take a dip to cool off, and round the day off with a barbecue.
