The dining area seats 6, and there is a spacious sitting area with two settees and 2 very comfortable arm chairs, satelite TV and video, and CD player. The two bedrooms are on the first floor, one double and one twin, with tiled shower room, and separate W.C.

Area Description:

Area Description:
The house overlooks the river Loue in a small village on the D705 close by a farm and market garden, in a mixed agricultural area with walnut groves, small vineyards and apple orchards, 3 kilometres from the small town of Excideuil, with a chateau dating back to the 11th century, and a complete selection of bakers, butchers, and other small shops with a very well stocked supermarket. There is a good open air swimming pool at Excideuil, open during July and August, together with tennis, and lake swimming at the lake at Rouffiac with a supervised sandy beach, water sports, pedalos and other children’s entertainments.

The village is set in the middle of an area bounded by Limoges to the North, with its famous museums of porcelain and enamels, Angouleme to the West, Bergerac to the south with its celebrated vineyards and Brive to the east. All these cities are well within a day’s visit.
Perigueux, the regional capital of the Dordogne is a 20-minute drive away, and other places to visit include the ancient town of Sarlat, Brantome, known as the “Venice of the Perigord”, Thiviers with its Foie Gras museum and St. Jean de Cole, winner of the prize for France’s most beautiful roofs and listed as one of its most beautiful villages.
No visit to the region would be complete without a visit to the pre-historic sites including the famous Lascaux II, a very clever facsimile of the original cave, discovered in 1940, and containing works created 17,000 years ago and ranked first in the prehistoric sites in Europe for the number and quality of its paintings. Les Eyzies which houses France’s richest prehistory museum. This area along the Vezere river with its collection of cave art, tools, weapons and human remains is thought to be the richest in Europe. A little further afield, but within an easy day’s visit, the vineyards of Bordeaux, including the town of St. Emillion, the incredible pilgrimage village built into the cliffs at Rocamadour, and the spell-binding monolithic church at Aubeterre, hewn out of solid rock.
Local chateaux include Hautefort, set on high ground and dominating the village and countryside for miles around, with its magnificent terraces full of flowers set in a beautiful park of 99 acres. The fairy tale Chateau of Jumilhac Le Grand, also classified as a Historic Monument and reputed to have the “most romantic roofs in France”, according to the engraver Gustav Dore, and Bourdeilles.
There are delightful walks through the countryside, through orchards, vineyards and oak forests where in season the celebrated truffle is harvested.

If all this sounds too hectic, then a day relaxing here on the terrace, where you will only be disturbed by the sound of the river and the song of the birds, will soon help you to leave the cares of the world behind and help you savour the peace and calm of the countryside.
The PERIGORD REGION is noted for its reputation as a land of welcome, its inhabitants will help you to share its fascinating past, savour its cuisine, and the charm of its homes.

Area Activities

Area Activities:
Excideuil:
There are various guided walks and a circuit of discovery, with a National prize.
On the cliffs of the chateau there is organised rock climbing, and in the meadows at the foot of the chateau is a well laid out Health Route running along the banks of the river.
There is a roller skating track with free access, and a number of hiking, horse riding, mountain biking and cycling circuits in the canton. Fishing is available in season.
The village of St Pantaly has a series of events throughout the year but there are a few that are worth considering if you are able to arrange your holidays to coincide with any of them.

The first Friday and Saturday in July…..African Festival. Two days of African music and dance with an African Market and displays. We have a link with Senegal and each year the Maire and a few helpers visit Senegal and help with agricultural projects, sinking wells, and schools etc.
A few years ago we had a band, which had played before huge audiences in places like Paris, Brussels, Biarritz, Marseilles, etc.

The second Sunday in July ………….Fete des Fours (the Festival of the ovens)
Large loaves of bread are baked in traditional ovens and eaten and sold at the Festival which takes the form of an open air lunch where over 400 people sit down to a typically Perigordian lunch with aperitifs and wine included….all for 15 euros!!

On the first Sunday of July is the Felibree. An all day Traditional Folk Festival of the Perigord which is held in a different town each year. The whole town is festooned with garlands of paper flowers and displays of traditional country crafts.
Montignac:
Tickets are available here to visit Lascaux II, on sale at the Tourist Information Centre.
On the last week of July……International Festival of folk music and dance from around the world. We have seen groups from Argentina, Africa, Bulgaria, China, Martinique, Ireland and Scotland. This really is a spectacular event with Fireworks on the Saturday night. It is open-air, weather permitting (and it usually is) and is timed from about 9.00pm till after midnight, together with street events during the day.
Perigueux:
There is an excellent museum, largely devoted to Gallo-Roman remains, but other rooms have impressive collections of ethnography, natural history, porcelain, painting and sculpture.
The market, on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, spreads out around the central boulevard and into the squares close to the Cathedral. The city has indoor and outdoor swimming pools, theatres, discos, and all the amenities of a city of this size, and on the outskirts a golf course.
First week of August…..International festival of Mime in Perigueux.
Wednesdays in July and August…..Macadam Jazz. Outdoor Jazz concerts in the city centre of Perigueux.

I will be in residence and available to advise on the various events taking place during your holiday, together with advice on places to visit, routes, local restaurants, or any other help you may need to get the most out of your holiday. The village is within very easy driving distance (90 minutes)of the Regional Airports of Limoges and Bergerac.
Alternatively, should you wish to “do it yourself” I will keep a low profile and be available only if requested.
